It can hardly be argued that our American culture is turning more and more relativistic, postmodern, and agnostic. And our young men are getting destroyed in the process. Even the president’s new health care act allows children to be on their parents health care plans up through age 26 and even a few more years after that in certain areas. The age of adolescence with little responsibility but with large amounts of autonomy continues to widen here in America.
- Boys are 30% more likely to drop out of school.
- Girls now outperform boys on every level from elementary school to graduate school.
- Boys less likely to get BA’s (46% vs 56%) and graduate degrees (45% vs 55%)
- Boys make up 2/3 of special ed students
- Boys are 5 times more likely to have ADHD
- Social awkwardness continuing to rise among college males. Studies have been shown that they do not know how to communicate one-on-one. Do not know the verbal and non-verbal rules of communication. Lack of intimacy.
- Now prefer asynchronous internet world to the spontaneous interaction of social relationships.
We have taken young men in our society and have allowed them to be continual boys. J.C. Ryle, an Anglican bishop in the 1800’s, gave five dangers that young men face. And therefore, to rid society of our continual boy-hood, I urge us to look at those dangers and face them head on.
Dangers That Young Men Face:
Young men are often filled with big heads, high-minded, and impatient of any counsel.
Youth is the time when our passions are strongest – and like unruly children, cry most loudly for indulgence. No surer way to get a seared conscience and a hard heart towards the things of God, than to give way to the desires of the flesh and mind. (1 Peter 2:11, Colossians 3:5, Galatians 5:24, Romans 13:14) Earthly pleasures will all be unsatisfying, empty, and pointless. All that glitters is not gold. All that tastes sweet is not good. All that pleases for a while is not real pleasure. Young men, if you love life; “Flee from sexual immorality” (1 Corinthians 6:18). Like black grease, you cannot even touch it without getting dirty. Flee from the thoughts of it; resist them, destroy them, pray against them – make any sacrifice than give way to them.
Maturity is understanding the consequences of actions. Satan whispers “don’t think” whereas the Word of God exclaims “consider your ways.” Foolish talking, kidding, joking, careless how you walk, and excessive amusement mark young boys. Learn to be thoughtful.
Contempt of Christianity
Men may tell you that there are difficulties in the Bible; things hard to understand. Be very sure of this – people never reject the Bible because they cannot understand it. They understand it too well; they understand that it condemns their own behavior; they understand that it witnesses against their own sins, and summons them to judgment. Men try to believe the Bible is false, because they don’t like to believe it is true. Never laugh at Christianity, never mock those who are serious and earnest about their souls. The time will come when your laughter will be turned into sorrow.
Fear of Man’s Opinion
Few young men seem to have any opinions of their own, or to think for themselves. Like dead fish, they go with the stream and tide. Opinion becomes their religion and their god. Care nothing about man’s opinions. (Matthew 10:28) Do not worry about what the world says or thinks, you will not always be with the world. Do not fear the reproach of men or be terrified by their insults.
