On October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier (Mach 1) in the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft.  65 years later on the same date, Felix Baumgartner ascended in a Helium balloon to an altitude of 128,000 feet where he became the first person to break the sound barrier and hit a maximum speed of 834 miles per hour.  Here is the amazing video of a true accomplishment.
