For the word of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
The Cross is the most destructive word, the most destructive event, the most destructive thing in all of human history. God’s Word tells us that the Cross of Christ – the full Gospel of Jesus Christ – is a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles. Through God’s Law it shows us our sin, our depravity, our helpless state before God. It shows us we are dead in our sin, slaves to unrighteousness, blind and in the darkness, children of wrath, and forever storing up God’s wrath in Hell against our sin for which we are accountable. It shows that the sinner continues to put their trust in man’s words and refuses to bend the knee to God. It confronts our pride, demonstrates that we are not good, and reveals to us that we are unworthy wretched sinners. For that reason the Cross destroys – and the prideful and self-righteous stay in the City of Destruction looking on the Cross as utter foolishness.
The Cross is the most saving word, the most kind event, the most loving thing in all of human history. God’s Word tells us that the Cross of Christ – the full Gospel of Jesus Christ – is the power of God unto salvation. Through Christ’s atoning work on the Cross it shows us that He saved us not by any works or righteousness on our part but that He chose to save some by His grace alone. It shows us that we are alive in Christ, slaves to righteousness, He opened our eyes and placed us in the light, adopted as sons and daughters in Him, and are forever secured by His completed work in Heaven. It shows the sinner his need to repent and trust in God’s Word alone and praise the One who saves. It makes us boast only in Him, demonstrates that He alone is good, and reveals to us His truth through the washing and regeneration of His Spirit. For that reason the Cross saves – the humble, unworthy run to the foot of the Cross as the only way by which we can be saved.
One Cross – Two Responses
If you have not truly repented and put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Cross is proof that you will pay the consequence of God’s wrath against sin in Hell for all eternity.
If you have truly repented and put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Cross is proof that Christ has paid for all of your sin and His righteousness will be credited to your account in Heaven for all eternity.
I pray that you respond in repentance and faith in Him alone and come to the foot of the amazing Cross.
