Have you ever thought about the irony of the bug zapper?  A bug zapper uses ultraviolet (UV) light to lure in insects attracted to this light.  On some nights, up to 10,000 insects can be vaporized by the high-voltage current that electrify their tiny little bodies.  Many insects see ultraviolet light better than visible light (totally different from us) and so they are attracted by this type of radiation.

So logic tells you if the sun gives off ultraviolet light, why wouldn’t these insect change their behavior and become diurnal (active during the daytime)?  Why would they continue to be active during the night, why be attracted to something artificial and deadly, and why continue to go in this wrong direction and die?

The irony of the bug zapper is a great analogy for the irony of the false convert or the false religion.  They so want to follow god with their religiosity, legalism, emotional “spiritual” experience, or antinomianism that what they are attracted to is ultimately leading them to death.  The truth of Biblical Christianity is the real, authentic light, but they exchange this truth for an artificial god of their own making.

It is very ironic that each of these “spiritual” people who – do religious deeds, are covered in self-righteousness, have emotional experiences with god, and are carnal ‘christians’ – put all of their energy into what is storing up wrath for them with the true God.   The Bible says in Matthew 7:22-23:

Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’  And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

There are true and false conversions, a narrow gate and a wide gate, sheep and goats, the house built upon rock and one built upon sand, good soil and bad soil.  Following Christ is difficult, in all actuality it is impossible on our own.  Salvation is by God’s grace alone and it is not easy.

It calls for knowledge of the truth (the sun rather than the buzzing UV light), repentance (turning away from the high-voltage killer called sin), submission to Christ as Lord and a willingness to obey His will and Word (a life of becoming active during the day).

Do not fall into the irony of the bug zapper…follow the truth.
