And so in honor of all the crusades, altar calls, and sinners prayers from modern Christianity, here are the top 10 ways to lock in that decision for Christ. Because we all know just getting those numbers of decisions means that it was you who just got a slew of people saved.
#1 Give out candy while you have people accept Jesus into their heart (an especially effective method for getting children to “repeat after you”)
#2 Structurally construct your church with a sloped floor so that gravity can assist the people in coming forward during the altar calls.
#3 Hand out cards and have people check Box A if they made a decision, Box B if they are really, really close to making a decision, Box C if they are really close to making a decision, and Box D if they thinking about making a decision. Any box kinda counts as some decision.
#4 Play the chorus of “Come Just As You Are” 15 times instead of 12 to ensure maximum emotional stimulation to get people to make a decision.
#5 Tell them Jesus wants to be their forever friend, leader, CEO, or coach of their life. It makes people feel good if they have the Creator of the Universe cheering them on and riding shotgun in their automobile called life.
#6 When you do altar calls, put some plants in the crowd to get things moving. It’s always much easier if people don’t think their standing up for Jesus on their own.
#7 When you ask for people to close their eyes, repeat a prayer in their heart, and then raise their hands to let you know if they made a decision; keep acknowledging hands by saying “ooh, there’s one…thank you…there’s another…praise Jesus” even if there are none. Gotta make people feel like they are missing out on something.
#8 Tell them Jesus has a plan for their life. And while you are at it, throw in some blessings and better marriage and more successful at their job because Jesus wants them to have an ‘audacious’ life.
#9 Tell them accepting Jesus into their heart comes with free babysitting on a weekly basis so you can sit back and have a coffee from the Starbucks in the church, see a great rock concert, and hear a great self-improvement, ear-tickling message.
#10 Tell them Jesus loves them while leaving out everything about their sin, the call to repentance, the Lordship of Christ, the cost of following Him, and everything about the cross. All that stuff just won’t make them feel good inside.
Believe it or not, each one of these approaches are being taken every weekend in evangelical Christianity. All of these ways are more effective in getting so-called decisions and drawing crowds but the consequences are a watered-down gospel which is no gospel at all and false assurances of salvation.
Success in ministry is not based upon numbers or decisions or money received or people who attend your show, but faithfulness, godliness, and spiritual committment to God and His Word. Real success is not getting results at any cost but facing the world courageously and preaching Christ crucified regardless of the consequences.
Preach the Word faithfully and do not be ashamed of the Gospel of Christ for it is foolishness to the one who perishes but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18).
2 Timothy 2:8, 12 states:
“Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God….which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me.”
